Nixon returns

Nixon was noticed by some local children who said his eyes “didn’t look right” so they rang Moreton Bay Koala Rescue.  He was suffering from the infection known as Chlamydia which  sadly is contributing to the decline of the South East Koala population.

He didnt really appreciate being persuaded to leave his tree and after a rescue by our highly trained rescuers, was transported immediately to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital where he underwent a 45 day treatment.  He was 6 years old and weighed almost 7.5kg.

By the end of January 2011, Nixon was rehabilitated and released back into the area he came from.

There are 4 common koala diseases caused by the chlamydia organism:

Conjunctivitis (may cause blindness)

 Pneumonia

Urinary tract infections

Reproductive tract infections (may cause female infertility)

The symptoms of chlamydia include sore eyes, chest infections, and “wet bottom” or “dirty tail”.

Early diagnosis of the infection is very important in determining the success of treatment so if you see a koala that you suspect may be suffering from this infection please call our 24/7 rescue number
