Koala stuck in barbed wire fence

It was midnight and Moreton Bay Koala Rescue received an urgent call from a member of the public to say that a koala was stuck in barbed wire on a fence in Deception Bay. Unfortunately this fence had been erected around a stand of gumtrees which the koala thought would be nice to enter for a meal.

Our rescuers found this handsome big boy luckily was not caught in the barbed wire, but confused and unable to work out how to get down. While deciding what would be the best way to safely get him off, he proceeded to walk along the top of the fence. This was a relief as we could see that he was walking fine and there were no signs of injury.

We were able to encourage him to climb backwards down the fence where one of our trained rescuers was able to capture him and contain him, he was not very happy either.

A short drive along the waterfront found him a better position among the trees away from the fence to enjoy another trouble free night.

We encourage all residents and business to erect wildlife friendly fencing, barbed wire is particulary dangerous for many of our native wildlife. Fruitbats and gliders are also often victims of this kind of fencing. If barbed wire is absolutely necessary, hanging reflective objects or tape along the wire as a warning is recommended.
